1. Los Angeles, or L.A. for short, is the second largest city in the United States, after New York, and the largest in the state of California

  2. Hollywood, a district of Los Angeles, is of course famous because of the American film industry.  

  3. The city is home to people from all over the world, who together speak more than 200 different languages.

4. One of the most important parts of the Los Angeles economy is the entertainment industry, which includes the production of films, TV programmes and video games.


5. The film studios of Hollywood have produced many famous films, although now some of the most important studios are in other places in California

6. Los Angeles has important sports teams such as the Los Angeles Dodgers (baseball), the Los Angeles Lakers (basketball) and Los Angeles Galaxy (football, or ‘soccer’ as people call it in the United States). 

7. One of the most famous footballers in the world, the English player David Beckham, went to play for Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.  

8. The climate of Los Angeles is similar to that of the countries around the Mediterranean sea in southern Europe, with sunshine on more than 250 days per year and less rain than many other parts of the United States.   

9. One of the most famous landmarks in Los Angeles is the huge ‘Hollywood’ sign in the Hollywood Hills. The sign is made from white letters, each about fifteen metres high. 

10. The city grew very quickly during the twentieth century. Around 13 million people now live in the Los Angeles region, but in 1900 the population was less than a million.
