1.  The capital of Canada, Ottawa, is probably less well known than the larger cities of Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver.

 2.  An animal called a beaver is one of the national symbols of Canada. They are mammals that spend a lot of their time in water, and are well known for building  dams across streams.

 3.  Canada is the second largest country in the world, after Russia, and is forty times larger than Britain.

 4.  In winter almost all of Canada is very cold, and in some parts of the country the temperature never rises above freezing. 

 5.  Canada is a rich country with a ‘quality of life’ that is among the highest in the world. 

 6.  Although it is a huge country, its population is only 33 million. This means there are fewer than four people per square kilometre.

 7.  One of the most popular sports in Canada is ice hockey.

 8.  More than three-quarters of Canadians live in the south of the country, less than 200km from the border with the United States.

 9.  Canada receives a lot of immigrants from many different places, and has therefore become one of the most multicultural countries in the world.


 10. The official languages of Canada are English and French. Most Canadians who speak French as their first language live in the province of Quebec.
